Zhao Zisen
Zhao Zisen, male, born in February, 1932, Professorate Senior Engineer and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Graduated from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 1953, worked as a teacher in Wuhan Telecom School from 1954 and a lecturer in Wuhan College of Posts and Telecommunications from 1958, worked in Wuhan Research Institute of Posts and Telecommunications (WRI) from 1974 to 1993, successively holding the posts of Deputy Director of the Research Laboratory, Head of Institute of Optical Communications and Deputy Chief Engineer, Chief Engineer as well as Chief Engineer and Deputy Head of Wuhan Research Institute of Posts and Telecommunications (WRI) and has been a Senior Technical Adviser since 1993. He was also a member of the Presidiums of the sixth, seventh and eighth National People's Congress from 1983 to 1997 and has been a counselor of People’s Government of Wuhan City since 1999. Since 2000, he has been a professor and doctoral supervisor of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, a standing committee member of Science and Technology Council under Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, Execute Director of China Institute of Communications, Director of Professional Group on Optical Communication, Vice-Chairman of Hubei Association for Science & Technology and the Chief Scientist of Optics Valley of China.
As one of the scholars who are first to research into optical communication in our country, academician Zhao Zisen raised up optical communication in 1973 when optical communication has not been put into application internationally. He developed the first practical optical fiber cable and the first set of optical fiber communication system in our country in Wuhan Research Institute of Posts and Telecommunications and formed industrial production and used them for engineering construction. As the leader of the General Optical Communication Expert Team of State Scientific and Technological Commission and the Director of National Technical Committee on Optical Fiber Communication Engineering, he has participated in drafting the “6thfive years”, “7thfive years”, “8thfive years” and “9thfive years” National R&D Plans for Optical Fiber Communication successively; as the Chief Technical Leader and Chief Designer, he has finished six national key optical cable communication projects and those of Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, such as the first practical 8Mb/s, 34Mb/s and 140Mb/s of our country successively and has been responsible for and completed the Aerial Optical Cable Project (Beijing-Wuhan-Guangzhou), the longest in the world at present, making the optical fiber communication technology get the large area promotion and application with significant benefits and economic benefits achieved. HisPrinciples of Digital Optical Fiber Communication System, the first book in our country, was exhibited in Moscow and Frank Ford (voice) as an excellent book of science and technology of our country. HisPrinciple of Single Mode Optical Fiber Communication Systemwon the second prize of National Excellent Scientific Publications. Over the past several decades, he has totally published more than 50 papers and written and co-written 10 books. He has also visited many countries and regions, such as Europe and America many times on behalf of our optical communication field and conducted academic exchanges on both the international and domestic communication conferences many times. His research achievements won 3 second prizes of National Prize for Progress in Science and 3 first prizes of Prize for Progress in Science of .Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications. He was honored as National Experts with Outstanding Contributions and Special Class Model Workers of Hubei Province and Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications etc. and been awarded with the National “May 1” Labor Medal etc.
